I always felt that Nolan’s Cross are sighting stones. Place a man with a high flag on each of the four stones, then in the money pit areas walk until four flags merge into two. We didn’t have sophisticated survey equipment back in the 1500-1700s. A lot of surveying was done by eye. My background is in Civil Engineering, here in Nova Scotia. Today people in small boats use similar methods with natural landmarks.
