Primary Sources & Royston Cave Pt 1 & 2

I hope you have all had a Happy Solstice, A Merry Yule & Christmas!

I have opted to share part one and two of an ‘off-the-cuff’ series on Royston Cave and a discussion on the nature of Primary Sources. A Primary Source? This term is often used but little understood.

Video one, below: The Origin’s of Royston Cave – What’s in a Name? Is a video about the dating process and establishing the earliest known source for dating both the cave and the town of Royston’s name.

The Origin’s of Royston Cave – What’s in a Name? Royston is a royal market town that dates to the 1100s and was built by Augustinian monks at a crossroads of political significance. The ancient Roman road from London, near the Templar HQ, leads straight up to the seat of power in the north of England… The Viking city of York… The east-west route dates to the pre-Roman era.

The Knights Templar carved Royston Cave as an initiation chamber at this very important crossroads. They would have had a kiosk above the cave to hide it, changed money, and sold their merchandise goods to the public. Royston’s spelling has changed since the 1100’s but has always been a derivative of Rose, Rohese, Rosia, or Roisia’s Town.

King James I built a large hunting lodge in Royston and preferred it to the hustle of London. Though he was not responsible for the naming of the town, as King of England, Scotland, and Wales, his era is without a doubt important to its mysteries.

The town and its cave pre-date him by hundreds of years and has always been a royal encampment before entering London. Royston is 50 miles from London and is a perfect place to rest before making the long trek back to the seat of government at Westminster Palace.

The carvings in the cave are particular to the time of Sir Geoffrey de Mandeville and his wife, Lady Rosia. This power couple, together with the Knights Templar, carved out this sacred space. He is a noted and respected figure to the Templars. Sir Geoffrey and his wife gave money to Royston and were in league with the Templars to control the intersection.

Some of the iconography in the cave was in use during the 12th century and was found in the graveyard of a Templar castle in the Holy Land. This particular symbol fell out of use in later centuries. This symbol along with other factors helps to date the cave to the 1100’s – Perhaps there may have been carvings added at later times, but the bulk of the work is intact.

The Templars also had their own market town 8 miles to the south. Baldoc is named after Baghdad! This video is short and is not representative of the depth of information available to date Royston Cave, the town, and its origins. It is meant as a gateway to the factors and evidence that can’t be easily brushed aside which places the town, its benefactors and the Templars to the 1100’s –
